Here's a custom poem that I wrote last winter commemorating the season. As we head into colder days, I'm reflecting on the transitions, emotions, and moments between seasons.
Once Upon a Winter’s Night
The soft and brittle snow envelopes the ground, crisp as it crunches underneath my feet
The bitter and cool air draws me in as I try to keep a quickened pace to return indoors as fast as I can
Finally, inside, I feel the warmth of my home greeting me with the first fruits of the evening: an opportunity to rest
In the stillness, in the quiet I can’t help but reflect on all that’s transpired to get to this very moment
This moment of peace, of gratitude, and of simplicity which calls me to a higher standard—a standard of living not just for me but for others
A standard of living not just for today, but for the next generation’s reality
A standard of caring not just for those closest to me but also for all of humanity
It’s always fascinating how the most basic of moments will often bring you into a space of reflection and processing
In the winter, I consider all the things that led to the end of the year and wonder about how the next one will go
Then I remember that this life, this journey is all about just that: the journey, the how we respond, the why we do what we do, and the who comes along for the ride
And so I choose to lean into that, for now, and for always
And remember how blessed I am to be here, on this day, in this moment, counted among the living
